Driver fined after truck tipped, spilled millions of bees

The Daily Herald newspaper in Everett reports that the Washington State Patrol cited the truck driver with second-degree negligent driving. Trooper Mark Francis says the 36-year-old Idaho man was driving too fast for conditions and the weight of the truck.

At about 3:30am, a semi-truck changing from northbound I-405 to northbound I-5 rolled onto its side, resulting in its cargo, millions of bees in boxes each containing about 5000, being spilled across the freeway. Thousands of bees escaped, and while beekeepers are using smoke to calm the bees and attempt to reload them, firefighters had to resort to using foam to kill many of them. The driver of the bee truck was not injured in the crash, and cleanup of the scene should be complete by about 10:00am.
