Driver in fatal collision fell asleep behind the wheel
The Monroe man was eastbound in a gray 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse, according to a State Patrol memo. He suddenly drove onto the westbound shoulder, struck a construction barrel and overcorrected.
The two people who died in a two-car head on collision near Maltby in Snohomish County on Monday have been identified as Redmond residents Joan S. Kinger, 76, and Stanley Kinger, 79. Authorities say Joan Kinger was pronounced dead at the scene and Stanley Kinger died later at the hospital. Injured in the crash was the driver a Mitsubishi Eclipse that the state patrol believes caused the accident, 24-year-old Gerardo Martinez-Urrutia of Monroe. Martinez-Urrutia and a 1-year-old girl in the car with him were rushed to Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center with critical injuries after the accident. According to the state patrol the Kingers were headed westbound on Highway 522 at about 3:15 p.m. when the eastbound Mitsubishi Eclipse crossed over the center line and collided with the Kingers’ Ford Fusion. Authorities say the Mitsubishi for some unknown reason drifted onto the right shoulder of the highway east of Fales Road, then hit a construction barrel, over-corrected and crossed the center line to crash into the Ford. The crash resulted in the closure of the stretch of Highway 522 in both directions for close to four hours.
