A portion of Lakeway Drive was closed early Thursday morning, April 17, after a woman crashed her SUV into a power pole, according to the Bellingham Police Department. Police believe Tawny Lesha Julius, 22, was intoxicated when she crashed her 2002 Cadillac Escalade into a power pole near Lisa Lane just before 2 a.m., causing the pole to buckle and collapse onto her car, police spokesman Bob Vander Yacht said. Puget Sound Energy had to respond to the crash scene, where wires were dangling over the road, and traffic had to be rerouted. PSE crews shut off power while they worked on the dangling lines, though PSE didn't return a call about how long the power was out. Julius was booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of driving under the influence and third-degree driving with a suspended license. A sobriety test at the crash scene led officers to believe that Julius was intoxicated, but she refused a breath test at the jail before she was booked, Vander Yacht said. She received no major injuries in the crash.
