Teenager killed in early morning accident near Oak Hill

"It is important to note that the Oak Hill Police Department was not actively engaged in a pursuit of this vehicle at the time of this accident," said Fayette County Sheriff Steve Kessler. "Unfortunately the very poor decision made by the teenage driver to 'run from the cops' has resulted in the tragic death of another young teenager."
A 15-year-old passenger is dead and a 17-year-old driver is injured after a car accident on an icy Route 16 near Lochgelly, West Virginia. An Oak Hill police officer tried to stop a car for a minor traffic violation near Save-A-Lot in Oak Hill.  When he turned on his lights, the driver fled, accelerating to 80 m.p.h according to the officer.  Due to the dangerous conditions of the roadway, the officer chose not to pursue the vehicle. Deputies state that they answered a call moments later from the driver of a car that was "running from the cops" and had crashed their car and their passenger was severely injured as a result. When EMS crews arrived at the scene they were able to transport the 17-year-old driver to the hospital. The passenger was a 15-year-old boy from the Pax area.  He had to be extracated from the vehicle and was subsequently sent to Plateau Medical Center where doctors pronounced him dead. We will update this tragic story as new details emerge.
