One woman killed, 5 injured, others flee, after two cars crash in Milwaukee.
Police hunt for people involved in fatal Milwaukee crash.
Driver arrested in 2-car crash in Milwaukee that killed woman.
A 33-year-old woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash early Sunday in Milwaukee that occurred after a brief pursuit by police, and one or more people in each vehicle involved may have fled the scene.
Officers from District 5 spotted a 2005 Pontiac Aztek driving erratically without headlights by 9th and Locust streets around 2 a.m. and tried to stop the vehicle for about a minute but canceled the pursuit when the Aztek refused to pull over, police said.
The vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic and was struck by a 1998 Ford Escort a short time later at 32nd St. and W. Burleigh, killing the woman, who was a passenger in the Aztek.
Witnesses and video evidence confirmed that the vehicle was no longer being pursued by police when the crash happened. Current department policy on extended pursuits requires officers to have probable cause that someone in the car is committing a violent felony or is an immediate threat to the safety of others.
The 29-year-old Milwaukee man driving the Escort and four passengers from both vehicles were taken to hospitals for treatment but are expected to survive.
Police are trying to determine who was driving the Aztec, and they are looking for occupants of both vehicles suspected of fleeing the scene on foot.
UPDATE: Shemikia Spencer has been identified as the fatality in this accident. 12/12/13.
