At about 8:45 a.m., an eastbound van crossed the center median and overturned on the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Benson. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the 15-passenger van lost control after one of its tires blew out. Nine people in the van were transported to WakeMed, five were transported to a Clayton hospital, while one was brought to a hospital in Smithfield.

According to police, a 1997 Ford Explorer driven by Aaron Siegel of Scotts Valley, California, was eastbound on I-40 near mile marker 248 when a tire blew, causing the vehicle to veer into the median and roll over at about 1 a.m. Two passengers, Chelsea Lawson, 29, and Natasha Siegel, 6, also of Scotts Valley, were ejected from the vehicle and killed. Neither passenger was wearing a seat belt. Aaron Siegel, who was wearing his seat belt, was airlifted to UNM Hospital with critical injuries.

Authorities say a family from California and a 3-year child were killed in a head-on collision on Interstate 40 east of Flagstaff. Arizona Department of Transportation officials on Thursday identified 23-year-old Michelle Bernadet Yaeger, 66-year-old Bruce William Yaeger and 68-year-old Elna G. Yaeger among four victims who died at the crash scene. The Canoga Park, California family was traveling about 15 miles east of Flagstaff. ADOT spokesman Raul Garcia says 3-year-old Kyler Lee Jensen was one of four Winslow family members in the other car and died at the scene.
