Witnesses reported seeing children being pulled from the van following the wreck.

The van then overturned in the westbound travel lanes at mile marker 329 near Benson.
At about 8:45 a.m., an eastbound van crossed the center median and overturned on the westbound lanes of Interstate 40 near Benson. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, the 15-passenger van lost control after one of its tires blew out. Nine people in the van were transported to WakeMed, five were transported to a Clayton hospital, while one was brought to a hospital in Smithfield.
