A 22-year-old Toms River man was killed in a single-vehicle crash Monday night, police said.
Richard C. Bitterle III was driving north on Route 9 when his 2013 Kia crossed the center line and struck a tree, authorities said. The crash took place around 10:48 p.m. just north of Sunset Avenue.
Bitterle was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River, where he was pronounced dead. He was alone in the vehicle.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
The woman killed in a two-car crash in Estell Manor Sunday afternoon has been identified State Police as 84-year-old Dorothy Gorman.
Gorman was in a Chevy Lumina traveling southbound on State Route 50 when it was struck while trying to turn left and sent spinning into the other lane.
She was found in the back seat. She was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Also in the vehicle were driver Mary Gilson and her husband Dennis Gilson, both of Woodbine. They were transported to a hospital for medical attention. Mary Gilson is Gorman’s daughter.
State Police say the driver of a car died after the vehicle slammed into a tree in the center median on the Garden State Parkway in Middletown.
The victim's name has not yet been released.
Tuesday morning's crash closed the northbound express lanes, creating a 13-mile traffic backup and causing delays for motorists. Traffic was backed up to I-195.
A State Trooper stated that it's unclear if weather played a role in the crash. Police also says there was debris from a dead deer in the road and it's not clear if the motorist had swerved to try to avoid it.
A Rosenhayn man was pronounced dead at the scene of an early morning accident Sunday involving a tractor-trailer and a van on the N.J. Turnpike, a state trooper said. The accident in the northbound outer truck lane occurred near mile marker 96 at 1:40 a.m., he said. An investigation is continuing.
John Visconti III, 48, was driving a 1997 Peterbilt tractor-trailer, when it struck a 2001 GMC Safari van that was driving below the speed limit in the right lane, police said.
