A man was taken into custody early Thursday morning following a police pursuit that began in University City and ended in Clairemont. At about 4:50 a.m., a clerk at the United Oil gas station on Governor Drive near Genesee Avenue called San Diego police about a man who tried to smash a store window with a sledgehammer. Police briefly chased the suspect, later identified as Vongdara Vongvichitch, through surface streets before he crashed the Honda Civic he was driving into a fence on Limerick Avenue off Clairemont Mesa Boulevard in Clairemont.

A woman and her small daughter died Tuesday when their SUV smashed into the back of a grocery store delivery truck on north Interstate 5 south of the Orange County line. Many drivers who witnessed the crash or saw the wreckage right after were distraught, one woman posted on Twitter. Northbound traffic was halted for nearly an hour. Even after two lanes opened, the backup worsened and extended as far south as Oceanside Boulevard.

A woman and a child were hit by a car in Bay Terraces Monday morning. The pair were walking on Paradise Valley Road near Deep Dell Road when they were struck about 7:10 a.m., San Diego police said. Witnesses said the woman and the child were thrown onto the hood of the car and then up and over, police said. Both victims were hospitalized. The driver of the vehicle stopped. Police are investigating and have not said what caused the crash. Officers are conducting traffic control in the area.

A pedestrian was killed early Sunday morning in Old Town when he was run over by several vehicles on Interstate 5, the Medical Examiner's Office said.

The man, between 25 and 35 years old, was in the southbound lanes of the freeway north of Old Town Avenue when he was hit about 3:15 a.m., the office said.

He was dead when authorities arrived.

The victim’s name was not released.

A 70-year-old man was flown to a medical center with life-threatening injuries when the vehicle he was driving overturned and pinned him inside Sunday morning, fire authorities said.

The man was driving on Little Gopher Canyon Road near Old River Road when the vehicle flew off the road and landed on its roof about 7:15 a.m., said a spokesman for the North County Fire Protection District.

It took firefighters about 40 minutes to free the driver from the vehicle.

The victim was airlifted to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido with life-threatening injuries.

A 15-year-old boy was taken to the hospital with a serious head injury after being hit by a vehicle Thursday afternoon, a Cal Fire official said.

The teen was riding a BMX-style bike near Jamacha Road and Helix Street about 4:40 p.m. when the crash occurred, a Cal Fire Capt. said.

A 22-year-old driver suspected of being under the influence of drugs and alcohol was arrested early Wednesday morning in a crash on the Rincon Indian Reservation. The man was headed east on North Paradise Creek Lane near Valley Center Road about 6:15 a.m. in a Honda Civic when he drifted into westbound lanes and sideswiped a Toyota Tacoma, a California Highway Patrol Officer said. The man told officers he had just taken off his seat belt and was reaching for his iPod. He said the collision sent the Honda driver, Cory Allen of Valley Center, into the windshield.

At least two lanes on eastbound Interstate 8 at Lake Murray Boulevard are blocked due to a multi-vehicle crash.

The crash happened just before 5:15 p.m., and authorities' response has prompted the closure of at least two lanes, backing up traffic for several miles.

The roadway was cleared shortly before 6 p.m.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

The California Highway Patrol said all lanes of southbound Interstate 5 near the Coronado Bridge have been reopened after a pedestrian was struck and killed on the freeway Wednesday night. The lanes were closed for about six hours and reopened at 2 a.m. The incident was reported shortly after 7:30 p.m. The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the CHPl, the pedestrian was struck by at least three vehicles. One of the vehicles stopped, and its driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI.

Escondido police arrested a man suspected of crashing a stolen van into another car, then running away Tuesday afternoon.

Richard Berumen, 38, of Escondido, was taken into custody on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing injury and vehicle theft, police said.

A man called police shortly after 1 p.m. and said he’d just seen his stolen Toyota Sienna van being driven at Valley Parkway and Ash Street, police said. The man recognized it from its broken headlight even though it had the wrong license plate, Lanigan said.
