Illinois State Police have identified the driver of a car that crashed on Interstate 57 early Saturday, killing one of his passengers.
Illinois State Police at Pesotum said Brent McCullough, 36, of Rantoul, was given a notice to appear in Champaign County Circuit Court at a later date to face charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and improper lane usage.
McCullough's passenger, Eric L. Lowery, 34, of Rantoul, was killed in the crash that happened just before 2 a.m.
Police said McCullough was northbound near Thomasboro when he lost control, left the road to the right, and hit a guardrail. The car came back on the road and flipped, hitting a pickup truck as it overturned.
State Trooper Tracy Lillard said the trooper handling the crash reported McCullough had a moderate odor of alcohol coming from his breath and admitted he had been drinking alcohol.
There were two other passengers in the car but their names were not released by police.
Lillard said McCullough was not taken into custody since he was also injured in the crash. She believed he was taken to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana but officials there had no information on him Tuesday.
Lillard said crash reconstructionists are still investigating. The crash detoured traffic off I-57 for about four hours Saturday morning.
