Man charged with manslaughter in fatal crash near Cornelius

Washington County sheriff's Sgt. Bob Ray said 53-year-old Adam Buchalski was also indicted Friday on reckless driving and fourth-degree assault counts.
A young Hillsboro woman died in a head-on crash Sunday morning on Southwest Susbauer Road near Long Road in Cornelius. Maria Lara Martinez was traveling southbound in a 1999 Honda Accord around 10:30 a.m. when she was hit head-on by a 2006 Mercedes Benz SUV driven by Adam Buchalski, 63, of Cornelius. Witnesses said Buchalski was traveling northbound in the southbound lane, and was passing a vehicle in a no-passing zone. He and his passenger, Paulina Lea, 51, of Cornelius, were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive. Martinez was pronounced deceased at the site.
