Child left in hot car in by shopping mother in New Jersey; Police break window in rescue (VIDEO)

Yesterday in New Jersey, the nerve-wracking rescue of a child left in a hot car was captured by a witness with a cell phone. In the video, a Bergen County sheriff’s officer smashes the window of a minivan, and then a second officer pulls out a young girl, who is crying and sweating profusely.

According to CBS News, Officer Rich Carrion was alerted by a Costco employee in Hackensack, New Jersey that a child was left in a vehicle in the parking lot. In a  YouTube video uploaded by Rafael Rodriguez II, a crowd is gathered around the van as a good Samaritan is trying to unlock the door through a cracked window (despite the lingering myth, a cracked window will not keep your car from heating to dangerous temperatures!).

An officer approaches the minivan, quickly gauges the situation, and then breaks the rear window. As concerned onlookers ask if the baby is OK, a second officer crawls inside the car to pull the little girl out of the car seat and out into fresh air. One officer exclaims, “She is soaking wet!”

While police are trying to locate some water for the toddler, the mother of the child returns to the car with another child, pushing a cart full of groceries, saying, “Sorry, sorry, sorry,” as officers disregard her apology, “No sorry! She could’ve died!” The news story indicates that the little girl was evaluated at a hospital and later released to her father, while the mother is charged with child endangerment.
