Samsung's 'see-through' Safety Truck has potential to save thousands of lives (VIDEO)

There are few driving scenarios scarier than attempting to pass a truck on a two-lane highway. When you’re in a car behind a semi, it feels impossible to know for sure when it’s safe to attempt to overtake a giant vehicle hauling tons of cargo, no matter how straight the road or time of day. It always feels like a gamble, which is why the news this week from Samsung is so exciting.

Using wireless and photonics technology, scientists at Samsung have created the “See-through” Safety Truck. The truck features:

- built-in wireless camera at the front - 4 rear outdoor monitors - night vision mode

Basically, there’s a giant flat-screen TV on the back of the trailer, allowing motorists to see exactly what’s in front of the truck in real time. So far only a prototype exists, which was tested on the roads in Argentina, but the technology is promising.

According the Federal Highway Administration, in the U.S. accidents involving passing account for over 25 percent of serious or fatal crashes between a truck and a passenger vehicle. Statistics like this demonstrate just how much of an effect this technology could have if implemented across the trucking industry, especially in a country where travel by highway is by far the most popular. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6GNGfse9ZK8
