Stray cat crawls into car engine, survives crash, gets new home
I don’t want to be hyperbolic, but this is literally the most important story in the history of the world. Last Thursday in southwest Little Rock, a car crashed at the intersection of Interstates 430 and 30. As first responders were assisting the injured driver, they heard a noise coming from the engine compartment. Upon opening it, they were shocked to find a orange tabby kitten, miraculously uninjured.
The little feline, apparently a stray, had sought shelter inside the vehicle. While the accident might make it seem like she picked the wrong vehicle in which to set up camp, the cat’s luck soon turned around because while the driver didn’t recognize the cat, she immediately fell in love with her and decided to adopt her on the spot. She named her “Hallelujah,” or “Halle” for short.
Since her new cat mother needed to take a trip to the hospital, where even miracle kittens are not welcome, the Little Rock Metropolitan Emergency Medical Services (MEMS) personnel said they could take care of Halle until she could go to her new home. She spent the day being lavished with attention (they made a ribbon collar for her out of a trauma band!) until her new owner was released later in the day.
Reasons why this is the best story ever:
1) The animal that crawled up into the engine compartment was an adorable kitten, described by one MEMS employee as "sweetest little cat you've ever seen." Once when we took our car into the shop to fix the air conditioning, the mechanics found a rat. A RAT. There’s nothing wrong with nice rats that people have for pets, but I am very afraid of even the cute little dalmatian ones thanks to a rodent phobia. The thing found in our engine compartment made me afraid to go in our car for weeks afterward. If my husband opened the hood to check the oil and I was standing near him, I would involuntarily scream in expectation of a rat jumping out and biting my jugular (remember that phobias are not logical). I don’t think I can overemphasize how much better finding a kitten would have been.
2) Everyone loves a turnaround story. Basically, “X was having a bad day but then X happened, making it much better.” This story is a turnaround story squared. There are few things scarier than being involved in car accident. Event the best-case-scenarios ones are a giant pain in the ass—you have to deal with insurance, your car being messed up, etc. So, this woman went from being completely freaked out, realizing she probably needed a new car, facing a hospital stay to having a new pet! An adorable, miracle pet! If you tried to write a movie script about this story before it actually happened, Hollywood executives would be like, “No, sorry, it’s just too unrealistic.” BUT THIS STORY IS REAL!
3) Being an emergency responder is an incredibly stressful job. You see so much death, injury, and destruction. Can you imagine what was going through that guy’s head when he heard the sound coming from the engine compartment? “Oh great, now I’m probably going to get bit in the jugular by a rabid rat.” Instead, he gets to rescue—I repeat—the SWEETEST LITTLE CAT YOU’VE EVER SEEN.
