Which state really has the worst drivers?

truthfinder worst driving record by state

I’ve lived in five different states, and in each one there is at least one designated bad-driving scapegoat. In Wisconsin, it’s Illinois drivers (and Minnesota in the northern part of the state). In Minnesota, it’s Wisconsin. In Massachusetts, Rhode Island drivers are the worst. Both Washington and Idaho hate Californians generally--especially their driving. Despite these highly scientific studies that are in no way based on proximity (or the location of rival sports teams), none of these states are actually home to the country’s worst drivers.

Luckily, the website Truthfinder has figured it out for us. Taking data from data from the IIHS, NHTSA, and the U.S. Justice Department, they have put together an interactive guide that tells you exactly where the worst drivers in America are. The findings are based on drunk-driving arrests, speed-related deaths, and other driving-related deaths. You can see how your state fares here.

The good news is that the top three worst states are some of the least populated: North Dakota, Wyoming, and Montana are 1, 2, and 3. The least-worst drivers are in Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey at 50, 49, and 48, respectively. Unsurprisingly, these rankings seems to correlate heavily with the availability of public transportation, which is tied, of course, to high population density. As with a previous interactive map put out by Auto Insurance Center that detailed the “deadliest” states for driving, the information in this map isn’t all that compelling when you consider what it would be if adjusted for per capita driving deaths.

Still, the Truthfinder map is interesting because you can separate out deaths by speed and drunk driving, which changes the results. As someone who spent the majority of my formative years in Wisconsin, the perennial binge-drinking champion in the U.S., I was pleased to discover that we’re not the worst for drunk driving arrests--we’re only the 6th-worst.

How does your state fare? More importantly, how does your state’s bad-driving scapegoat fare?
