One dead after head-on collision in Bessemer

The accident happened when the driver of a Jeep Cherokee began traveling the wrong way on I-459 Southbound near Exit 6. The vehicle struck another Jeep Cherokee head-on.

A fatal accident on I-459 South near exit 6 left one person dead and two others with significant injuries. Saturday about an SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-459. The driver of the second SUV was extracted from the vehicle and transported to UAB Hospital with significant injuries. The passenger of the second vehicle was transported to UAB Hospital with unknown injuries. The driver of the wrong way SUV, in his early 30's, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the fatality victim as Johnny Alexis Barco. He was 34, and was from Homewood.
