Highway 280 drivers call scene of fatal wreck 'unsafe'

The women who rescued a baby from a fatal crash on Highway 280 are calling that stretch of road unsafe. Jordan Mays, 25, was killed Tuesday in a crash near the intersection of Highway 280 and Shelby County 280. Investigators say an 18-wheeler driven by Renae Garner-James, 39, struck Mays' Honda CRV. Mays was dead at the scene. The collision happened right in front of OnMark Physical Therapy, where Shari Hyde has worked for three years. When she heard the crash, she and her co-workers ran out to help. "I am just so grateful that God placed us here at the right time to help somebody," Hyde said.

Safety concerns about 280 intersection where young mother was killed

People who work around say this light at the intersection of Highway 280 and the Narrows is the problem. Just before the light, cars and trucks are driving down an incline, and people around here say a lot of times, it’s impossible for big trucks to stop in time.

Its Jordan’s baby, her husband, and her entire family that Deason and the salon staff are focusing on now. They’ve set up a fund to help pay for funeral expenses. “Help this family, they are obviously very broken right now and any assistance would be huge,” Deason said.

The preliminary accident report states that Jordan Matson was lawfully going through the intersection on a green arrow at that very busy intersection near the Narrows, and that the tractor trailer ran the red light," Wright said.
