Two girls, ages 5 and 8, injured when roof of home collapses on 7th Avenue West in Birmingham, Alabama
5-year-old released from hospital after roof collapse; 8-year-old still hospitalized
Edwards said when police officers got to the scene, they could hear the kids screaming. He says the girls suffered serious injuries but he expects them to recover.
“They’re removing a lot of bricks off the kids. I think they were laying on the couch, they were smothered with bricks and a lot of weight. So those guys just really jumped in there and moving bricks, and able to recover both young ladies," Edwards said of the heroic efforts to rescue the girls.
"I don't consider it being a hero. I call it doing my job. What I'm called to do. If it means getting two girls out of the roof that collapsed. I'll do it every day," Officer Wallace Russell added.
