Gary Timothy Cooper, 49, killed in workplace accident when 3-ton steel coil fell on top of him in Decatur, Alabama

Officials have identified the victim of a fatal accident at Independence Tube Corp.’s Decatur plant that occurred this morning when a 3-ton steel coil fell on a worker. Gary Timothy Cooper, 49, was killed in the accident shortly after 4 a.m., said Morgan County Coroner Jeff Chunn. Chunn said Cooper, who went by "Tim," had a Hartselle address but was originally from Decatur. “We are deeply saddened to report that at approximately 4 a.m. Wednesday morning, a fatality occurred in our Decatur facility,” Independence Tube Corp. President Rick Werner wrote in a statement. “Local emergency personnel responded immediately, but unfortunately (Cooper) was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.”
