Last night around midnight, Fort Payne police and fire officials responded to a one car wreck on 8th St. NE at the railroad crossing.

The passenger, 24 year old Antonio Martin, was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The driver, 23 year old Miguel Jose Jr., also of Fort Payne, was transported to Erlanger Hospital in Chattanooga, where he later died.
Two die in fiery Fort Payne wreck
Police were on the scene within 90 seconds of the call and started trying to put out the fire with fire extinguishers. Firefighters arrived 2 minutes later, but the truck was engulfed in flames by the time they got there. Firefighters had to put out the blaze before they could determine there were two people inside, and begin work to get them out.
Both the passenger and driver suffered from severe burns and were taken to the hospital, though the passenger died and the driver remains in critical condition.
