Makayla Jones, 6, injured by car on Mastin Lake Road on May 26.
6-year-old struck by car critically injured
Huntsville police said a young girl was hit by a car while running across Mastin Lake Road near Inglewood Drive on Monday morning.
The wreck happened a little before 9 a.m. Police said the girl ran across the street to get a ball. The driver swerved but wasn't able to stop in time, hitting her.
Police closed the street as rescue crews treated the girl. They said the child was unconscious when they got to the scene, but some witnesses said the girl woke up before HEMSI took her to the hospital. Witnesses reported they heard the victim let out a faint cry as crews treated her.
Family members said the child, 6-year-old Makayla Jones, was at the house visiting a cousin for their birthday. She was flown to Children's in Birmingham and is currently in the intensive care unit in critical condition.
The family said she has a small amount of bleeding, a concussion, a skull fracture, and is in and out of consciousnesses. Makayla's mother is there with her.
Jimmy Jones lives near the scene and saw the child run into the roadway.
"The lady (driver) tried every way she possibly could not to hit the child," he said. "The way she ran, she was so close, she couldn't avoid her."
It is for that reason officers said the driver will not be charged.
