Two 2-year-olds killed in Shoals not in restraints; 'no excuse' expert says

According to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, child safety seats reduce the risk of a fatal injury by 71 percent for infants and 54 percent for toddlers. In 2012, there were 298 traffic fatalities involving children 4 and under; 88 of those were not restrained.

Johana Vargas, 2, died Tuesday from her injuries she received in a car crash on Sept. 6. Authorities say she was not in a child restraint when the crash happened. Authorities said Juan Carlo Vargas, 27, and Anna Vargas, 40, the child’s parents, and Gael Vargas, 3, were injured in the crash. The family was traveling in a Jeep Compass that crashed with a Ford F-150 truck driven by Allen Cole Pickens, 63. Pickens and a passenger in his truck, Karen Pickens, 58, also of Mount Hope, were taken to Russellville Hospital.
