Mother, young daughter killed in separate accidents within hour
Police told WAFF that the mother, 39-year-old Julia Yates Patterson collided with another vehicle in the middle of Valley Head at about 3 p.m. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to Valley Head police, Patterson's 5-year-old daughter was hit by a vehicle while out in the street about a half-hour later. This happened on Alabama 117 just north of Mentone near the Georgia state line.

UPDATE: Mother killed in Tuesday wreck identified, her child died short time later in second incident
A short time after that wreck, a vehicle hit and killed a child pedestrian on Highway 117 south of Mentone. The child, who investigators say was the 5-year-old daughter of Patterson, was pronounced dead on the scene.
ALEA is investigating, but at this time, we don’t know why or how the girl ended up on the highway.

Wilson says the woman’s 8-year-old daughter, Elizabeth “Libby” Patterson, ran in front of a car and was struck and killed about 30 minutes later. Police say the girl had just gotten home from school and wouldn’t have known about her mother’s death.
