Before the tragic accident, Karen and her twin sister Sharen, for 20 years, did not go a single day without speaking on the phone. "You think you're going to live and grow old together," said Sims.

Ms. Shields was a member of Grace Church in Ringgold. She was employed by TVA for the last 35 years serving in the purchasing and transportation departments.

Survivors are her husband of 35 years, Mike Shields; sons, Matthew and William “Will” Shields; grandsons, Cash and Stanford “Ford” Shields; father, Bill Mueller; twin sister and brother-in-law, Karen Mueller Sims and Lee Sims, sister, Kim Mueller, special nieces and nephews, Natalie, other daughter, (Billy) Atwell, Phillip (Missy Robinson) Teems; and great-nieces and nephews, Edy and Sophie and Johnathan and Elon.

Sharen Shields was riding in a car on Highway 98 and Ralph Schumacher Lane with two other people when their vehicle was rear-ended while stopped in traffic. The force of the impact pushed the car 30 feet. Shields was taken to a local hospital where she later died of her injuries. Shields' sister, Karen Sims, and her niece, Natalie Sims, sustained injuries in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle, Rogelio Moreno-Salazar, 23, was arrested and charged with with vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.
