Loxley police officer dies after single-car crash in Stapleton

As news of Mitchum's death began to spread late Monday, law enforcement agencies across Baldwin County began posting messages on Facebook. 
A Loxley police officer was killed Monday in a single-vehicle crash in Stapleton. Sgt. Charles "Kerry" Mitchum, 57, of Loxley was traveling on Oak Lane at about 3 p.m. when the crash happened. He transported by helicopter to the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, and later died. Mitchum was named the department's officer of the year in 2011.
