No survivors found after plane crashes near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park

Two people are believed to have been on board a plane that crashed Thursday morning near Wrangell-St Elias National Park and Preserve, Alaska State Troopers said in an online report.

The Alaska Rescue Coordination Center was notified at 11:41 a.m. Thursday after an emergency locator beacon transmitter was activated near Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.

The pilot and passenger have not been identified. The plane, which also carried U.S. mail, was flying from Gulkana to McCarthy, officials say.

Midair breakups are uncommon and often involve bad weather. Johnson said investigators are looking into the weather, but that it did not appear to be an immediate factor.
