A landscaper, later identified as Octavio Herrera, 61, is in critical condition after he was hit by a pickup truck in a chain-reaction crash in the east Valley Wednesday morning.
Police said a 17-year-old Mustang driver, who was street racing with another teen, blew through a stop sign and hit the exterminator's pickup near 52nd Street and Earll Drive at about 8 a.m.
The crash sent the truck and its 27-year-old driver through a block wall, hitting a landscaper, who was mowing a lawn. The driver of the pickup was hurt but is expected to be OK.
"There was debris as you can see to the south," said a Phoenix police Sgt. "We have some debris that appears to be 100 feet down the road. We also have some in yards."
The flying debris damaged three other vehicles, police said.
Police tracked down the other alleged street racer, a 16-year-old boy, and his two passengers at a school in the area of 3100 N. 56th St. Officers said the boy had driven his vehicle home after the accident and exchanged it for another car before he went to school.
Both drivers each face two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of endangerment.
