A man stole one of Tempe’s free residential buses as it was idling outside a transit center on Tuesday morning and drove for several blocks before he crashed it into a block wall, according to a Tempe police spokesman.
The suspect, later identified as Patric Moonie, 21, stole the Orbit bus at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday from the Tempe Transit Center on Fifth Street east of Mill Avenue, said a Tempe police spokesman.
There were no passengers on the bus and the driver had left the small vehicle running outside the transit center, police said.
The suspect was located near Mill Avenue and 13th Street and attempted to flee, when a Rhodesian Ridgeback and an American Bulldog made the suspect surrender to police after jumping a neighborhood wall, Pooley said.
The man crashed the bus into a wall near 15th Street and College Avenue, police said.
Initially the suspect crashed into a property near Mill Avenue and Hudson Street, then drove the bus to the railroad tracks, police said.
Police took the man into custody without incident, police said, and officers remained in the area Tuesday morning conducting the investigation.
