A man in a wheelchair died after being struck by a vehicle heading eastbound on University Drive in Tempe early Wednesday morning, police said.

The collision forced police to close University Drive near Loop 101, according to Tempe police.
The man, 60, hit and at about 6:15 a.m. and died on scene near University and George drives, according to Sgt. Michael Pooley, a Tempe police spokesman. Police said the driver, who was also an older man, was not impaired.
Police said the collision caused traffic delays Wednesday morning. University Drive was closed from Price and Evergreen roads and the northbound lanes of Price Road had restrictions, according to Pooley. Investigators expected the closures to remain in effect for several hours, Pooley said.
