Two die in car crash near Five Points, but not before one delivers baby

About 7:15 p.m., on Highway 145 and Elkhorn Avenue, a Honda Civic driven by the pregnant woman traveling north collided with a Kia Optima traveling south. The Honda crossed over into the middle of the lane for an undetermined reason and collided head-on with the Kia, said California Highway Patrol.

The driver of the Kia was also killed in the crash.

The newborn and the boy were taken to the hospital in critical condition.

There were three passengers between the two cars, including a 10-year-old boy. The driver of the Honda Civic was six to nine months pregnant – her baby was delivered on-scene via caesarean section. All four were taken to Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC).

Investigators say 18-year-old Joanne Delgado from Kerman crossed the median, near Highway 145 and Elkhorn, for unknown reasons and collided with another vehicle.

"At this point, it's undetermined exactly why that driver crossed over those double yellow lines," said Victor Taylor with the CHP. "We have unknown speeds on both vehicles, and we have no indication there was any foul play or anything of that nature."
