1 Dead, 1 Hospitalized After Big Rig, Car Collide in Gardena(link is external)

One patient was hospitalized in critical condition and the other patient was declared dead on scene, Gardena Police Department Lt. Video from the scene showed a totaled black Nissan sedan and a large big rig with its front grill smashed, blocking lanes. One person died after a big rig and a passenger vehicle collided in Gardena on Wednesday afternoon, according to CHP. The collision was reported at at 3:56 p.m., according to California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Bishop. Bishop did not have details on how the crash occurred or the status of any victims other than the one who died. The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the crash, using the jaws of life to extricate one patient who was transported to an area trauma center, according to a tweet from the department.

A 22-year-old woman who was killed in a head-on crash with a big rig in Gardena was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner’s office on Thursday. Navas was pronounced deceased at the scene, a Los Angeles County Fire Department battalion chief said. The sedan ended up in eastbound lanes, where it was struck head-on by a different big rig, according to Officer Dan Zuleta of the California Highway Patrol. She was initially identified by a CHP official as a 23-year-old woman from Los Angeles. Navas was headed westbound on El Segundo in a black Nissan Sentra when the car clipped a big rig that was stopped in the center turning lane and spun out of control.
