The man was driving a 1972 Volkswagen Beetle south of Coast Road about 8:30 p.m. and for an unknown reason, he veered off the west edge of the road and hit the tree, CHP spokesperson Jaime Rios said.

The man lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a large tree Thursday night in Monterey County, a Califonia Highway Patrol official said. Alcohol and drugs do not appear to be a factor. The driver's identity is being witheld pending notification of family.
