A National City police officer was injured overnight while attempting to rescue an unconscious driver from a crash.
A National City police officer was injured overnight while attempting to rescue an unconscious driver from a crash. The National City Police Department said the incident occurred at about 12 a.m. on the 1300 block of South Harbison Avenue in National City. Investigators said a woman was driving on the roadway when she lost control and slammed her white sedan into a pole. Officers said the woman tried to call a friend for help but passed out in her seat while the car filled with smoke. A nearby resident who heard the crash called 911, and when the first officer arrived and saw the interior of the car filling with smoke, he jumped into action. The officer smashed the side window, cutting his hand in the process, but allowing the woman to continue breathing fresh air. Firefighters who arrived had to use the Jaws of Life to rip open the driver's side door. The woman was pulled from the car wreckage and rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital. The extent of her injuries are unclear. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment, but will be OK.
