Man critical after being struck in head by RV mirror while standing on street.

A pedestrian suffered a life-threatening injury Tuesday in Pacific Beach after being hit in the head by the side-view mirror of a motor home.

The 47-year-old victim was standing just off the curb in a crosswalk at Ingraham Street at La Playa Avenue about 2:30 p.m. when he was struck by a 1972 Winnebago, a San Diego police detective said.

The 40-year-old driver was heading south when her brakes failed, and she swerved to the right to avoid the car in front of her. That vehicle had stopped for the pedestrian.

She did not hit the car but did strike the man. He was hospitalized with bleeding to the brain, police said.

The motor home eventually came to a grinding halt, Wall said.

The name of the victim has not been released.
