A man was killed New Year's Eve after his car flipped over on Highway 1 in west Marin County, according to the California Highway Patrol. The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. north of the town of Marshall. Witnesses reported that two vehicles had been traveling north and crossed over the double yellow lines to pass other traffic, said Officer Andrew Barclay, a CHP spokesman. As the two vehicles were approaching a curve in the road, one of them merged back into the correct lane. But the driver of the second vehicle, a Honda, appeared to panic and lose control. The car spun out, flipped onto its roof and ended up deep in Marshall Creek, Barclay said. A passenger in the Honda was able to escape with the help of onlookers, but the driver was trapped, Barclay said. Both people, men from the Santa Rosa area, were taken to Petaluma Valley Hospital. The passenger was treated for minor injuries and released, but the driver was pronounced dead, Barclay said. Their names have not been released.
