San Francisco police chased an SUV wanted in connection with a Bayview district shooting down Highway 101 on Tuesday night, arresting the driver after a crash near the San Francisco International Airport, authorities said.

A search was still in progress late Tuesday for several occupants who fled from the SUV after the crash, including the shooting suspect, police said.

Southbound Highway 101 near Interstate 380 was briefly shut down as police took the driver into custody and searched for several others who had fled. Lanes were reopened after 10 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The investigation caused traffic to back up near the exit for SFO in Millbrae, and the gridlock stretched back toward San Francisco.

The incident began about 6:30 p.m. when two people sitting in a car were shot and wounded when someone pulled up in another car on Lucy Street in the Bayview district and opened fire, said a San Francisco police spokesman. The victims, whose names weren't released, were taken to San Francisco General Hospital.

Officers identified a suspect in the shooting.

Shortly before 10 p.m., police spotted a Jeep SUV with Colorado plates with the suspect riding inside, police said. Officers tried to stop the vehicle at Palou Avenue and Hawes Street, but the driver refused to stop, Shyy said.

The vehicle got onto southbound Highway 101 and crashed into another car near the junction with Interstate 380. The other driver suffered minor injuries in the crash, which is under investigation by the CHP.

The driver of the SUV was arrested, but three passengers fled, police said. One was seen in a creek area and others ran across the freeway toward an airport parking lot. Numerous guns were found inside the vehicle, he said.
