The pursuit continued across the bridge, and the motorcyclist exited the freeway and circled back eastbound, according to CHP. Officers lost sight of him around Treasure Island when another unit spotted him on the island and began pursuing him again.

Williams says he has no idea why Lilly would have been running from the cops, as he had no criminal record that police could tell at this time. "The usual things when people run are suspended license or stolen vehicle and that's not showing up here, so I couldn't tell you why — there was no reason for it."

Joseph Lilly was riding his motorcycle through the Bay Bridge toll plaza when a police officer noticed that he was speeding and did not have a rear license plate. The officer tried to stop Lilly, but he evaded that officer and others who tried to stop him until he crashed his bike at a turn on Treasure Island Road. He was ejected from his vehicle and seriously injured. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
