Michael Matagulay, 42, arrested after crashing his car into several police cruisers,before crashing his car down a small ravine off Esther Lake Drive in San Jose, California

A man who rammed into Santa Clara County Sheriff’s patrol cars and fled into the woods was arrested in unincorporated Santa Clara County on Saturday morning, a sheriff’s spokesman said. Deputies responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 6600 block of Croy Road around 5:30 a.m., police said. When deputies arrived on scene they found the suspicious vehicle parked at a home on Esther Lake Drive, police said. The suspect drove the vehicle into three patrol cars multiple times as deputies were getting out, he said. A deputy fired at least one shot at the suspect vehicle as it drove across Esther Lake Drive and hit another car before falling down a small ravine, according to police. The driver of the suspect vehicle then fled on foot into the woods, he said. Units from the San Jose, Gilroy and Morgan Hill police departments, Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and California Highway Patrol were called to assist at the scene. An emergency response team from the Sheriff’s Office was also called to search for the suspect due to the remote terrain, police said. The suspect, later identified as Michael Matagulay, was found hiding about half a mile away from the crash scene, he said. Matagulay, 42, of San Jose, was not injured and booked into Santa Clara County Jail on suspicion of multiple counts of assault with a deadly weapon and attempted murder with a peace officer. One deputy was transported with head pain and has been medically cleared, Stenderup said.
