Driver Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries In San Jose Crash That Closed Almaden Expressway.

Alcohol may have been a factor in a crash on Almaden Expressway Thursday that sent two drivers to the hospital and closed a stretch of Almaden Expressway just south of Highway 85 as the morning commute was getting underway, San Jose police said.

Two vehicles going through the intersection of Coleman Road and Almaden Expressway just after 12 a.m. collided, sending both drivers to the hospital, said San Jose police Sgt. Matt Christian.

Both drivers remain hospitalized, said Officer Albert Morales, spokesman for the San Jose Police Department, correcting an earlier statement from the Police Department that one of the drivers had been pronounced dead at the hospital.

One driver is being treated for serious, life-threatening injuries, according to the statement from Morales, which does not indicate the severity of the other driver’s injuries.

Police have not released the names of either driver. Investigators are looking into whether one of them may have been drinking prior to the crash.

Witness statements indicate the car on Coleman Road may have run a red light, according to police.

Northbound Almaden Expressway just south of Highway 85, between Coleman and Blossom Hill roads, was closed around 5 a.m. for the police investigation. As of 8 a.m., that intersection remained closed.
