San Leandro teen's death highlights dangers of distraction

But a growing problem that has caught the attention of federal safety officials and train operators played out Monday evening in San Leandro, where 18-year-old Brittney Silva - a college-bound high school senior - was struck by an Amtrak train as she spoke on her phone, just yards from her home.

A young woman crossing railroad tracks on a busy street was hit by an Amtrak train and killed Monday evening -- apparently while wearing headphones that may have prevented her from hearing the train or a bystander who tried to warn her, police said.

Train hits, kills woman wearing earphones in San Leandro

An 18-year-old woman wearing earphones was struck and killed Monday by an Amtrak train in San Leandro after a witness tried unsuccessfully to warn her of its approach, police said.

A female victim wearing earphones was struck and killed Monday by an Amtrak train in San Leandro after a witness tried unsuccessfully to warn her of its approach, police said.

The victim, whose name and age weren't immediately released, was walking south along the east sidewalk of Hesperian Boulevard near Springlake Drive about 5:55 p.m. as a southbound Amtrak train was approaching, said San Leandro police Lt. Rick DeCosta.

She was wearing "earbud"-style headphones, authorities said, and a witness "yelled out to the victim in an attempt to warn her of the approaching train," DeCosta said. "The victim did not respond to the witness, possibly as a result of her not being able to hear him."

The victim was hit by the train and was found 50 yards south of the intersection. The train came to a stop several hundred yards after the impact, police said.

Witnesses told police that that the railroad crossing arms were functioning properly at the time of the collision, authorities said.

"This is a terrible accident, and our hearts go out to the family of the victim," DeCosta said.

The tragedy happened not far from where a butane explosion from a makeshift hash oil lab at a homeless encampment critically wounded two people and left a third injured on April 29.
