The driver of a car headed southbound on Pacific Coast Highway drove into the opposing lane of traffic and struck a sports-utility vehicle with four occupants Wednesday night, the California Highway Patrol said.

Scott Hart, 38, was identified as the sole occupant of a Mercedes traveling south on the highway when it veered into the opposing lane at about 8:20 p.m. Wednesday and collided with a northbound sport utility vehicle, said Brian Applegate, a medical examiner's investigator.
