Man and woman dead, one woman in critical condition after car crashes into utility pole.

Two people are dead and a third person is in critical condition after a car in which they were riding crashed into a utility pole in New Haven.

Police say the crash occurred shortly after the driver pulled up to the left side of a police cruiser at a traffic signal on Sylvan Avenue. The small station wagon then turned right in front of the police car when the signal turned green and sped off southbound on Howard Avenue on Friday night.

Police say the officer did not pursue the small station wagon and he later came across the crash scene.

Emergency medical workers pronounced a man and a woman dead at the scene. A second woman was taken to Yale-New haven Hospital.

Police are investigating, saying speeding and slippery road conditions may be factors.
