Teen injured in fireworks accident

A 13-year-old boy was injured in a fireworks accident Wednesday in Fort Lauderdale. The boy is one of three children to be reported injured by fireworks in Broward County this week. On Monday night, a 14-year-old Deerfield Beach girl was seriously injured when a firework exploded in her hand. Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue took the boy to Broward Health Medical Center as a trauma alert, the agency said. She tried to light the firework, and it exploded, causing major soft-tissue damage to her hand.

Teen loses hand in firework explosion

A teenager who was injured in a fireworks accident in Fort Lauderdale has lost a hand, a family friend said early Thursday. Relatives said McNair was riding his bicycle along Northwest Ninth Avenue in Fort Lauderdale when another kid threw him the firework. Doctors were not able to save his right hand, but they were able to keep part of his wrist joint attached, family friend Traci Miller said. It exploded when he caught it, removing his hand from his wrist. Javonte McNair, 13, underwent surgery Wednesday evening after being taken to Broward Health Medical Center with severe injuries.

Teen Injured By Firework Released from Hospital

New information has been released on the Fort Lauderdale teen who lost his hand in a fireworks accident. McNair was injured Wednesday while riding his bike after a neighbor reportedly threw a lit firework towards him. Family members said the boy who threw the firework lives behind the family and also burned his arm in the incident. Doctors amputated the teen's hand, saving only his wrist bone. Javonte McNair, 13, was released from the hospital Friday after undergoing surgery.
