Clearwater Police say Doug Carey, 70, was standing on the sidewalk at about 9 a.m. when he was hit and killed by a car that spun out of control after a crash at Belcher Road and Gulf to Bay Boulevard, which is also known as S.R. 60.

A retired Clearwater Police Officer who was working as a crossing guard, was killed Tuesday morning in a hit and run crash at a busy Clearwater intersection.

Clearwater Police say Doug Carey, 70, was standing on the sidewalk at about 9 a.m. when he was hit and killed by a car that spun out of control after a crash at Belcher Road and Gulf to Bay Boulevard, which is also known as S.R. 60.

Police reviewed videotape from a camera at the intersection and say a Cadillac was driving westbound at a high rate of speed on Gulf to Bay and ran a red light at the intersection of Belcher.

The Cadillac hit a Honda that was turning northbound onto Belcher from Gulf to Bay. The impact of the crash caused the Cadillac to spin out and hit Carey, who was on the sidewalk.

Police say a man who was driving the Cadillac had two girls ages 2 and 4 in the car. After the crash, the man ran away from the accident scene, but was caught by police in the Albertson's grocery store parking lot, which is near the intersection.

The girls were taken to Bayfront Medical Center as trauma alerts. One girl was airlifted. Both were originally reported as being in critical condition, but police say their injuries are not as severe as originally thought. The 4-year-old girl suffered multiple fractures and a possible head injury. The 2-year-old girl suffered minor injuries.

At this time, police do not know if the girls were ejected from the Cadillac or not.

The Honda involved in the crash was driven by a 22-year-old woman. She was transported to Morton Plant Hospital.

The man who was driving the Cadillac was charged with leaving the scene of an accident. Police are interviewing him.
