Columbia County sheriff's reserve deputy struck by log truck

Bernat, who is a retired Columbia County deputy and a current reserve deputy, is being treated at Georgia Regents Medical Center.
A Columbia County sheriff’s reserve deputy, Arnold Bernat, 67 is severely hurt after being hit by a log truck while bicycling Friday. Bernat was bicycling on Gordon Highway at Gate 2 about 1 p.m. when he tried to make a left turn and was struck by a log truck traveling behind him. Bernat is being treated at Georgia Regents Medical Center. Officials said he was wearing a helmet. The driver of the truck, 59-year-old Marcus Meriweather, was cited for following too closely.
