5 killed in I-16 crash near Savannah

Traffic had come to a halt for construction on I-16 eastbound near I-95 in Pooler when the driver of a tractor-trailer failed to stop, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Right now the eastbound traffic is being diverted over the Pooler Parkway ramps. The eastbound lanes will be closed until 12 p.m.. One westbound lane is shut down for now.

The Pooler Fire chief said, a vehicle crossed over the median into the eastbound lanes and slammed into another car.

State Patrol: 5 Killed in Head-on Crash West of Savannah

The State Patrol said investigators suspect a Ford Mustang traveling west on I-16 crossed the median and smashed head-on into a Kia Soul in the eastbound lanes.

In a news release, the State Patrol said five people were killed — three in the Mustang and two in the Kia. There were no survivors in either vehicle.

The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating a fatal crash on I-16 near MM 155 in Chatham county.

On Wednesday evening, the State Patrol identified the driver of a Ford Mustang that crossed the highway median into oncoming traffic as 49-year-old Aundrey Renar Douglas of Claxton. Also killed were Douglas' two passengers, 62-year-old Willie James Braggs of Glennville and 24-year-old Devon Mobley of Claxton. 

The State Patrol says two other motorists died in a Kia Sport struck by the Mustang. They were identified as 66-year-old Judith Johnson Vincent and 44-year-old Ronnie Bruce White — both of Eden.

 

Victim's mom: Driver 'drowsy' before I-16 crash killed 5

The crash happened barely 40 miles from Mobley's hometown of Claxton, located 50 miles west of Savannah. His mother, Dot Mobley, told WTOC-TVThursday that she spoke to her son possibly minutes before the collision. He said he was concerned about his co-worker, Aundrey Douglas, who was driving.

"He was telling me that Arnie was kind of drowsy and he was about to have a car accident," Dot Mobley said.

“It’s very upsetting I’ve been calling on the State to make improvements to I-16 and I-95 for several years now and you know, it can’t happen a minute too soon,” said Dean Kicklighter who serves as a Chatham County Commissioner.  The stretch of I-16 in question is in his district.

Funerals held to honor victims of I-16 crash

Visitation for Aundrey Douglas is Tuesday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Moody's Funeral Home in Claxton.

He will be laid to rest Wednesday with a funeral service at First African Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m. 

Willie Braggs will be laid to rest Wednesday in Glennville.

His funeral is at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Outreach Ministries on South Veterans Boulevard.
