Head-on collision on Hawaii Island leaves three dead

These are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th traffic fatalities on the island this year, compared with three at this time last year.

Because Queen Kaahumanu Highway between Hulikoa and Hinalani Streets is closed motorists are advised to avoid the area and to use alternate routes if possible.

Police received report of a head-on collision between a northbound pickup truck, driven by a 39-year-old man, and a southbound Kia vehicle on Queen Ka'ahumanu Highway at about 5:17am. The collision caused the Kia to catch fire, and while one 17-year-old girl managed to escape, the driver and two other passengers in the vehicle died. The 17-year-old girl and the 39-year-old driver of the truck were both taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries. We will update this accident as more information becomes available.
