Bogus Basin Road crash victim identified

When Wintz didn't return home, family and friends began looking for him. One of those searchers spotted the car Thursday.

Boise County officials say a man reported missing on Tuesday was found dead at the scene of a crash off Bogus Basin Road Thursday afternoon.

Boise County Coroner Pam Garlock confirms the deceased man is 26-year-old Eian Wintz of Caldwell. He was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators believe his truck went off the road and down the steep hillside around 9 p.m. Tuesday between milepost 10 and 11.

They say Wintz was in the area mountain biking. He said he was coming down, but never showed up.

"Apparently the gentleman that went off the road was up here Tuesday mountain biking and his family knew he was up here. Tuesday evening around 9:00, he had text his girlfriend and said he was coming down the hill, and that was the last they had heard from him," Boise County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Dale Rogers said.

When Wintz didn't return home, family and friends began looking for him. One of those searchers spotted the car Thursday.

"Today, they were out here actively, up here searching for him, and one of his friends happened to come along here, looked down there and saw the truck, recognized it, and then contacted us," Rogers said.

The Ada County Sheriff's Office assisted Boise County in investigating the crash. Idaho Mountain Search and Rescue helped the sheriff's and coroner's offices recover the body.

Rogers says they did not have any idea why he went off the road.
