A child has died and four more are injured after a dump truck and school bus crashed near Deer Flat and Happy Valley roads south of Nampa just before 8 a.m. According to the Canyon County coroner, 11-year-old Daniel Robert Cook from Nampa died at the scene of the crash. The names and conditions of the remaining injured children have not yet been released. Police say two of the four children were transported to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise, while the remaining two more were taken to Saint Alphonsus in Nampa. Authorities say the bus clearly sustained damage to its right rear while the truck was damaged from the front. Both the driver of the dump truck and driver of the school bus were not injured. Police say 12 elementary school children were on the bus at the time of the crash. Officials at the Kuna School District have confirmed that the bus was headed to Crimson Point Elementary. The Idaho State Police says the circumstances of the crash are still under investigation, but it appears the truck was headed northbound on Happy Valley Road, while the bus was headed eastbound on Deer Flat Road when both collided at the intersection. Police say there is a two-way stop at the intersection and those traveling on Deer Flat Road have a stop sign. That means that while bus did have a stop sign at the intersection, the dump truck did not. It's not clear if the bus driver stopped at the sign, then proceeded through. Davidson told KTVB the driver of the dump truck saw the bus and tried to slow down before the crash. He also says the dump truck driver tried to provide aid to the injured students, including the child who died. He says charges are likely to be filed in the case. Crash reconstruction experts from the Idaho State Police are currently working at the scene to better determine the cause of the accident.
