Elwood police: Icy roads cause fatal crash Thursday
Based on preliminary investigations, Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said it appears the car was traveling westbound at the crest of the Arsenal Road bridge, but icy conditions caused it to slide into the pathway of the truck traveling eastbound.
Police name man who died Thursday in Elwood crash
Maurice S. Powell, 32, of Park Forest was killed in the crash, and a passenger in the car, a 39-year-old Richton Park man, was seriously injured and sent to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
Powell was pronounced deceased at 6:50 a.m. Thursday, according to the Will County Coroner's Office. An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.
Elwood and state police are investigating the incident. Final cause and manner of death will be determined pending the outcome of the investigation, autopsy and toxicological reports, according to the coroner's office.
